The clipper Cutty Sark was built in 1869 in Dumbarton. She was destined for the tea trade, then an intensly competitive race across the globe from China to London. In the end the clippers lost out to the steamships that could pass through the Suez canal and deliver the goods more reliably.
She was then used for the Australian wool trade and sold in 1895 to a portugeuse company, returning to the UK in 1923. In 1954 she was restored and moved to a dry dock in Greenwich.
