The YAK-9 has been developed in the Soviet Union as opponent of the German superior Messerschmitt and Focke-Wulf fighters. It entered service in October 1942 and was used in the anti-tank role and as escort fighter. The YAK-9D had an extended range due to additional fuel tanks. This plane was in service with several allies of the USSR like Yugoslavia, Poland, Bulgaria and the French Normandy-Niemen Regiment. Over 3000 YAK-9 aircraft were produced from 1942-1946.
