The HPI SC-3SWP2 Waterproof Electronic Speed Control (HPI-114712) is a compact, durable brushed ESC designed for 1/10 scale applications. Version 2 is even smaller than before, making it well suited to tight chassis layouts while delivering reliable control for brushed motors within its stated limits.
Offering 2S–3S LiPo support (with built-in low-voltage protection) and 5–9 cell NiMH/NiCd compatibility, the SC-3SWP2 provides versatile power options. It delivers a 40A forward continuous current with up to 180A burst, plus reverse capability, all in a fully waterproof enclosure for confident running on wet grass, snow, sand or muddy surfaces.

This ESC will work with most transmitters, but a basic one to look at would be ET1060

This will be that the ESC is detecting low voltage cut of for lipo batteries.
If the motor is confimed working, then yes the ESC would be the first thing to check
That's an estimation.
If you are running extreme gearing, then your current draw will be higher - so I'd take the 12T limit with a pinch of salt in such cases
