Named for Thomas Gainsborough, one of the most important British painters of the 18th century, Gainsborough Blue is a shade of azure seen throughout his portraits and in the interiors and fashions of the era. It is also an official Admiralty bunting colour, standardised by the British Colour Council in the 1930s.

Thomas Gainsborough, a founder of the Royal Academy, was one of the most important British painters of the 18th century. Gainsborough Blue, a shade of azure, was used extensively in many of his famous portraits and was popular in interior decor and fashion of the time. It is also one of the numerous official bunting colours of the Admiralty and was standardised by the British Colour Council in the 1930s.
