Description

The J Perkins 4.0mm x 100mm x 1mtr Sheet Balsa (5518028) is an A-Grade balsa wood sheet for model making, aeronautical design and prototyping. It provides a lightweight material with a high strength-to-weight ratio, making it suitable for creating structural surfaces and three-dimensional forms without adding unnecessary mass.

This rectangular sheet is precision-cut to a consistent 4.0mm thickness, with a straight grain and smooth, open-grain surface. Balsa can be cut with a craft knife, shaped by sanding and finished with suitable adhesives, wood fillers and paints. Its workability makes it suitable for model construction where clean cuts, flush joints and shaped sections are required.

Model Making Applications

For architectural models, the 100mm-wide sheet can represent facades, floor plates, site contours and other broad surfaces. Its pale brown appearance provides a neutral base for painting, while the uniform surface can be marked for brickwork, tiling or cladding details.

In aeronautical and RC engineering projects, balsa sheet can be used for wing skins, fuselage formers and internal ribbing. Its low mass and structural character also make it suitable for flight-capable prototypes and scale aircraft construction. Other uses include lightweight film and television props, scenic miniatures, break-away elements, volumetric studies and look-and-feel prototypes. The sheet can also be laminated or steam-bent for curved forms.

Balsa Wood Sheets

A-Grade Balsa Wood sheets are an essential substrate for high-precision model making, aeronautical design, and professional prototyping. Recognised for having the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any commercial timber, these sheets provide a lightweight yet structurally reliable surface. Each 915mm (36"") sheet is precision-cut to ensure uniform thickness and a consistent, straight grain, meeting the exacting standards required for architectural and industrial mock-ups.

Applications:

  • Architectural Model Making: The primary material for representing large surface areas such as facades, floor plates, and site contours. Its pale, neutral tone is ideal for clean, minimalist presentation models, while its uniform surface allows for precise laser cutting or hand-scribed detailing to represent brickwork, tiling, or cladding.
  • Aeronautical & RC Engineering: A staple for constructing wing skins, fuselage formers, and internal ribbing. The material’s low mass is critical for flight-capable prototypes and high-performance scale aircraft, offering the necessary rigidity without compromising weight targets.
  • Film & TV Prop Making: Extensively used for building lightweight ""hero"" props, set miniatures, and break-away scenic elements. Balsa’s unique grain structure allows it to be carved, sanded, and painted to realistically simulate heavier timbers, stone, or metallic surfaces.
  • Industrial Prototyping: Ideal for rapid volumetric studies and look-and-feel prototypes. The material can be easily laminated or steam-bent to create complex organic curves, providing a fast and cost-effective way to test three-dimensional forms.

4.0mm x 100mm x 1mtr SHEET BALSA Key Features:

  • Exceptional Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Delivers the structural integrity of a solid timber with negligible weight—an indispensable quality for both architectural massing and aerodynamic models.
  • High Workability: Effortlessly easy to cut with a professional scalpel or craft knife. It is highly receptive to sanding, allowing modellers to achieve perfectly flushed joints and feather-edged transitions.
  • Consistent A-Grade Quality: Selected for its straight grain and lack of defects, ensuring predictable behaviour when cutting, bonding, or finishing.
  • Universal Finish: The smooth, open-grain surface is an excellent base for various adhesives, wood fillers, and paints, allowing for a high-quality professional finish.
