Historical Background

Le Renard was the last ship armed by Robert Surcouf. In September 1813, it achieved its greatest feat by defeating the English schooner HMS Alphea, further cementing Saint-Malo’s reputation as a haven for legendary corsairs. A faithful replica of the original vessel was launched in 1991 and continues to sail, delighting visitors and keeping the story of Le Renard alive.
