The 1996 Auto Trader RAC British Touring Car Championship season signified the debut of Audi in the sport with their four-wheel-drive A4s. Frank Biela secured the championship title, while Swiss driver Alain Menu once again clinched second place, and Swede Rickard Rydell claimed third.
Introduction of the Car
Following Audi's introduction of 4WD technology in the realm of rallying, showcasing its formidable capabilities, the next ambition was to challenge 4WD in circuit racing. Built on the foundation of the A4 Quattro 4-door sedan, this car made its first appearance in Class 2 touring car racing in 1995. In the subsequent year, 1996, it also entered the BTCC in England.
Under the hood resided a longitudinally mounted inline 4-cylinder 2-litre engine producing over 300 horsepower. Power was distributed to all four wheels through a quattro system coupled with a six-speed sequential gearbox.
Despite a 100 kg "weight handicap" imposed on the 2WD machines, the 4WD A4 secured the championship with driver Frank Biela.
This was a remarkable testament to the efficacy of 4WD in circuit racing on paved surfaces.
