Historical Context
Development of the Panzer III began in the mid-1930s with the intention that it would form the backbone of Wehrmacht armoured battalions, complemented by a smaller number of heavier Panzer IV tanks. Early versions carried a 37 mm cannon, which was soon replaced by a 50 mm gun as the design evolved. Later upgraded variants (Ausf M and L) adopted the 75/24 gun with 64 rounds, already in use on the Panzer IV. Production of the Panzer III ceased in August 1943.
