The Italeri Sd.Kfz. 167 Sturmgeschütz IV RR (part no. HC-223) focuses on the German Sturmgeschütz IV, a late–World War II assault gun developed on the proven Panzer IV chassis. Intended to operate effectively as a tank destroyer, it combined compact dimensions with significant firepower.

Armament and Design

The StuG IV mounted a high‑velocity 75 mm StuK 40 L/48 gun in a fixed casemate with an armoured mantlet. This arrangement provided a low silhouette and potent armour‑penetrating capability against major enemy vehicles, while offering improved protection for the crew compared with turreted counterparts of similar size.

Operational History

Introduced to units in early 1944, the StuG IV supplemented—and in many cases replaced—the StuG III after Allied bombing disrupted production in 1943. It was widely employed by Wehrmacht armoured formations and dedicated anti‑tank detachments. Thanks to its low profile, the vehicle was notably difficult to detect on the battlefield, enhancing its effectiveness in ambush and defensive roles.

This Italeri release highlights the key characteristics of the Sd.Kfz. 167 Sturmgeschütz IV, reflecting its role, armament and service use during the later stages of the conflict.

The Sturmgeschütz IV was developed on the chassis of the Panzer IV medium tank to provide the German army with an assault gun capable of effectively serving as a tank destroyer in the later stages of World War II.

The Stug IV was equipped with a Stuk40 75mm L/48 high-velocity gun installed in a casemate, protected by armoured mantlet, capable of penetrating the armour of major enemy armoured vehicles. Distributed to units in the early months of 1944, it supplemented and often replaced the Stug III assault gun, which had experienced a sudden decrease in production in 1943 due to increasingly frequent Allied bomber raids on German industrial areas.

Widely employed, the Stug IV was used by armoured units and anti-tank detachments of the Wehrmacht, where, thanks to its low profile, it proved to be particularly difficult to identify.
