Italeri WWII German Paratroopers (HC-6045) focuses on the renowned Fallschirmjäger of the Luftwaffe. Inspired by actions ranging from the airborne assault on Crete during Operation Merkur to the hard-fought defence of the Monastery of Montecassino in 1944, it reflects the unit’s reputation as elite infantry—earning the “Green Devils” nickname for their determined resistance.
Historical Background
- Fallschirmjäger were integrated with the Luftwaffe to coordinate closely with air power.
- A major success came with the conquest of Crete in May 1941 during Operation Merkur.
- Heavy casualties led to more frequent deployment as elite ground infantry rather than airborne troops.
- In March 1944, General Kurt Student’s 1st Fallschirmjäger Division defended Montecassino with notable tenacity.
Well suited to collectors, diorama builders and history enthusiasts looking to depict German paratroopers across pivotal WWII campaigns.

The “Fallschirmjäger” were, during the war, merged in the fighting bodies of the Luftwaffe for a better coordination with the air forces. The conquest of Crete during operation Merkur, in May 1941, was one of the biggest successes of German paratroopers. But the casualties were so high that their use was often limited to an elite infantry role more than as airborne troops. In March 1944, General Kurt Student's 1st Division Fallschirmjäger, holding their ground among the ruins of the Monastery of Montecassino, strenuously resisted the advancing Allies. Their resistance was so fierce that they were nicknamed the “Green Devils”.
