Description

The ICM Ki-21-Ia Sally - Japanese Heavy Bomber, part number HC-ICM72205, is a 1:72 scale plastic model kit of the first production version of Japan's Ki-21 bomber. The Ki-21-Ia entered service in 1938 and was used by Japanese air units during combat operations in China and at the Khalkhin Gol River. When Japan later entered the war against the United States, American pilots referred to the aircraft by the name 'Sally'. As newer Ki-21 variants appeared, early production aircraft were moved to flight schools.

This ICM kit represents the Ki-21-Ia configuration and includes detailed plastic sprues with the parts needed for assembly, together with illustrated assembly instructions. The finished model is presented in 1:72 scale, making it suitable for display alongside other aircraft kits in the same scale. Four historical marking options are provided, covering aircraft operated by Japanese air groups in China between 1939 and 1942.

The Ki-21 was a Japanese heavy bomber that saw active service during the early years of the conflict in China and later against Soviet forces at Khalkhin Gol. This first production version provides a subject linked to several stages of the aircraft's operational history, while the included markings allow the model to be finished as one of four specified aircraft from Japanese units based in China.

Specifications

The first production version of the Ki-21 bomber was the Ki-21-Ia. Deliveries of these aircraft to air units began in 1938. The bombers were soon involved in the “Japan-China incident,” which quickly turned into a full-scale war. The Ki-21-Ia equipped air groups were engaged in active combat operations and bombed the territory of China. In spring of 1939, the Ki-21-Ia took part in combat operations on the Khalkhin Gol River, where their targets were Soviet units. Later, when Japan began warfare against the United States, U.S. Air Force pilots gave this bomber the name “Sally”. After the appearance of more advanced models over time, the first modification bombers were transferred to flight schools.
