Germany began to modernise its army from 1933 onwards. An important part of Wehrmacht motorisation was the manufacture of special all-road passenger cars. Three types of uniform passenger cars were developed – light, medium and heavy. All of them had all-wheel drive, independent suspension, and a simplified open body.
The light uniform all-road car – leichten gelände Einheits Personen-Kraftwagen – was manufactured by the Stoewer Company, and also by BMW and Hanomag, since 1936. From 1940 to 1943, Stoewer produced the simplified model Type 40 without the rear wheels' steering gear. All in all, about 13,000 le.gl.Einheits-Pkw were produced. The cars ended up being too heavy, complicated and unreliable for mass-production.
le.gl.Einheits-Pkw cars were produced with different types of bodies – in particular, Kfz.1 – a four-seat personnel car.
