Description

The ICM M8A1 US Landing Mat (210 x 336 mm), part number HC-ICM53200, is a 1:35 scale plastic model kit representing the steel landing plates used by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The kit contains 48 parts for assembling a section of temporary airfield surfacing, with detailed moulded sprues and illustrated assembly instructions to guide construction.

M8A1 plates were developed for the rapid construction of temporary runways and were widely used during the Vietnam War in the late 1960s and early 1970s. They were particularly associated with army aviation, where they provided operating surfaces for helicopters, light attack aircraft and surveillance aircraft. Their presence in period photographs also makes them a useful subject for historical dioramas and military aviation displays.

Each full-size slab measured 3660 x 560 mm and featured a hard-corrugated surface to help drain rainwater. US Army engineering units installed the plates in staggered patterns or in rows, making it possible to create anything from small operating sites to larger airfields. This model kit captures that subject in a compact format suitable for a 1:35 scale scene.

Specifications

The M8A1 steel plates, developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers, were primarily used for the quick construction of temporary runways. These plates were extensively used during the Vietnam War in the late 1960s and early 1970s, particularly in army aviation for basing helicopters, light attack aircraft, and surveillance aircraft. They frequently appear in photographs from the period.

Each slab, measuring 3660 x 560 mm, featured a hard-corrugated surface that facilitated effective rainwater drainage. The US Army engineering units were responsible for their installation. The slabs could be connected in a staggered pattern or in a row, allowing for the construction of both small sites and large airfields.
