About The CH-54A Tarhe

Developed by Sikorsky Aircraft, founded by Igor Sikorsky, the CH-54 (originally the S-64) first flew on 9 May 1962. Built on a modular principle to simplify maintenance and repair, it featured tall three-post landing gear with a forward support that allowed a tractor and trailer to approach the fuselage. Powerful winches enabled cargo pick-up while hovering, removing the need to land.

During the Vietnam War, the Tarhe evacuated damaged aeroplanes and helicopters, and transported artillery, vehicles, tanks and even combat boats on an external sling. It was also used to drop high-powered bombs to clear forested areas for airfields. The type set 10 world records for its class, including lifting a 15-ton load to 3,307 metres. Its legacy continues in civilian service as the Erickson S-64 Aircrane.
