CV-3 Saratoga, fondly known as “Sister Sara”, was the second of the U.S. Navy’s Lexington-class aircraft carriers. Converted from a battlecruiser during construction, she featured a slim hull, an enclosed bow uncommon for the era, and a prominent starboard funnel with the bridge positioned forward. Saratoga served widely across the Pacific, withstanding severe damage and surviving WWII before being sunk as a target in 1946 nuclear tests alongside the Japanese ship Nagato.

This 1/700 scale plastic model assembly kit by Tamiya (part number HC-31713) depicts Saratoga as she appeared during the Battle of Iwo Jima in February 1945. The waterline model measures 396mm in length and 55mm in width, and captures the vessel’s distinctive asymmetrical form and radar fit of the period.

Key Features

  • Left and right hull pieces recreate the slim Lexington-class form, including the enlarged starboard bulge for the 1945 configuration.
  • Enclosed bow accurately rendered for improved heavy-sea protection detail.
  • Large starboard funnel with the bridge immediately forward, plus antenna and radar equipment faithfully reproduced.
  • Single-piece flight deck with moulded arresting wires and central guide rails used for moving seaplanes.
  • Deck lines and markings provided as decals for a sharp, effective finish.
  • Authentic detail parts including Mk.37 gun director, SK radar antenna and funnel-front SM radar.
  • Detailed 40mm quadruple mounts, 5-inch gun positions and lifeboats.
  • Integrated waterline plate as part of the hull for a clean display.
  • Includes parts for four Avenger and four Hellcat aircraft, depicted with radar pods/night-fighter specification.
  • Longest model in Tamiya’s famed Water Line Series at an impressive 396mm length.
  • Depicts 1945 fit with stoppered anchor bell mouth on the starboard side.

A Favourite Sister
The CV-3 Saratoga was launched as the second ship in the U.S. Navy's Lexington class of aircraft carriers in April 1925 and commissioned in November 1927. Fondly nicknamed "Sister Sara", she was in fact originally laid down as a battle cruiser but converted into an aircraft carrier during construction. Thus, she had a more slim-line hull than other carriers and featured an enclosed bow that was unusual for the times but improved protection from higher swells. The large starboard-side funnel was positioned almost in the center of the ship and featured the bridge with 5-inch guns immediately ahead of it. Sister Sara was the longest aircraft carrier to take part in operations in the Pacific, and she withstood some fearful assaults and damage to survive WWII. Her final contribution to the U.S. cause came in 1946, when she was used as a target and sunk in nuclear tests together with the Japanese ship Nagato among others.
