Historical Notes

The A6M3 Model 32 entered service in the summer of 1942 with improved high-altitude performance and higher top speed, but its heavier design, reduced fuel capacity and shorter wings lowered its operational range, leading to limited production. To address this, the Model 22 followed in 1943 with an 11 m wingspan, cleaner aerodynamics for speeds up to 420 mph, and new in-wing fuel tanks to restore long-range capability.
