The coastal Type II U-Boats were the first German submarines built after the First World War, entering Kriegsmarine service in 1935–1936. The improved Type IIB boats took on mine-laying duties around ports and river estuaries on England and Scotland’s eastern coast and operated against shipping in the English Channel. From spring 1941, these coastal submarines were used mainly for training in the Baltic.

This ICM U-Boat Type IIB (1939) in 1:144 scale (part HC-ICMS009) provides an accurate, compact project for submarine enthusiasts. The kit comprises 60 parts and builds to a length of 299 mm with a height of 88 mm. High-quality plastic sprues, clear assembly instructions and a display stand make for a neat, well-presented build, with four decal options to represent notable boats and commanders.

The coastal Type II U-Boats became the first vessels of this class that were built in Germany after the end of WWI.  The improved IIВ series submarines were built in Deutsche Werke (U13-U16) and Germania Werft in Kiel (U7-U12, U17-U24). They all were included to the Kriegsmarine in 1935-1936. Two flotillas were formed with those vessels – the 1st Weddigen and 3d Lohs.

With the beginning of WWII, the Type II U-Boats were in active use as mine-layers in the ports and river estuaries of England and Scotland's Eastern Coast, and also for the anti-shipping struggle in the English Channel area. From Spring 1941, the coastal U–Boats were used mainly in training role in the Baltic.
