The U-Boat Type XXVIIB Seehund (Early) was the most effective of Germany’s WWII midget submarines. Designed in spring 1944 and produced by Schichau Werk in Elbing and Germania Werft in Kiel, 285 units were completed before the war’s end. Entering combat in January 1945 with the 312 K-Flottilla at Ijmuiden, the Seehund undertook 142 actions and sank nine Allied ships. Post-war, four boats served with the French Navy until 1956.
