Historical Background

The ZiL-157 was developed in 1958 by the design bureau attached to the Likhachov automobile factory in Moscow. Its cross-country capabilities made it a useful base for a wide range of military vehicles, including fuel trucks, command and staff vehicles, radio and radar stations, transporters, anti-aircraft missile launchers, medical vehicles and multiple launch rocket systems.

ZiL-157 trucks served with Soviet and Warsaw Pact armies, as well as armed forces in Africa, Asia and the Near East. They were also used widely in local conflicts from the 1950s through to the 1970s. This model features markings for a ZiL-157 serving with the Soviet Army during the 1960s.
