How to mesh an RC spur and pinion gear correctly

Updated 2022-03-31 by Steve W

This is something we get asked about quite a lot and if not done correctly can result in premature wear of spur and pinion gears or in worst case scenarios motor and esc problems.

There are a few key things to know when meshing spur and pinion gears, is it too tight or is it too loose ?

If the mesh is too tight it will put stress on the motor and slipper clutch and if it is too loose it will damage the ends of the gear teeth.

We find the best way to get the correct mesh is the "paper method":

  • Cut a strip of normal A4 paper - around 1cm wide and say 5cm long should do it.
  • Insert this in between the spur and pinion gear
  • Push the gears together tightly (i.e slide your motor or engine across to push both tightly into mesh)
  • Tighten your motor screws up
  • Pull the piece of paper out - the gap it leaves should be spot on for mesh!

This will ensure the mesh has a very slight gap the width of the piece of paper.

This method has been employed for years by RC users and is the easiest way of ensuring a smooth mesh with the correct gap in between the gears.

I hope this helps!
