Produced at the Ford plants in Cologne from 1939, the G917T served widely across German army units and fronts until the end of the war, with approximately 25,000 trucks built between 1939 and 1941. Many were converted in the field into self-propelled AA vehicles by mounting anti-aircraft guns in the cargo bed—either on a special platform or directly on the truck bed—while the side panels were folded down or removed for firing. The 2 cm Flak 38, introduced in the second half of 1940, featured a reliable design and a high rate of fire (up to 480 rounds per minute), effective for close-range air defence and against lightly armoured ground targets.
