The Tamiya Destroyer Z Class Barbara2 (HC-31908) is a 1/700 Waterline Series set that builds two German Z-class destroyers. This renewed edition provides parts to depict either an early configuration or the late-war Project Barbara anti-aircraft fit as seen on Z37–Z39. Packaging and the instruction manual have been refreshed, and a cut-out paper flag sheet is included.
The Z-class destroyers served widely with the Kriegsmarine, including actions off Narvik, Norway, and duties escorting the battlecruiser Scharnhorst. Built during Germany’s pre‑WWII rearmament, the series spanned Z1 to Z43. Early ships (Z1–Z22) carried five 12.7 cm guns, while later 1936A and 1936A Mobilisation Types (Z23–Z34, Z37–Z39) adopted heavier 15 cm armament. By 1944, air power’s growing dominance led to the “Barbara” plan, adding substantial anti‑aircraft defences: fourteen 37 mm (six coaxial, two single) and ten 20 mm (three coaxial, one quad) cannon, plus six 8.6 cm RAG rocket launchers, with variations by ship.

About the German Destroyer Z Class
The Z class destroyer was constructed during Germany’s rearmament prior to WWII. Thecomparatively large hull and high temperature/high pressure boilers combined with efficientGerman workmanship for an imposing and effective ship. A large number of destroyers,designated Z1 to Z43, were deployed between 1935 and 1944. The early types (Z1-22) wererelatively lightly armed with five 12.7cm guns, while the 1936A Type (Z23-30) and 1936AMobilization Type (Z31-34, Z37-39) featured heavier 15cm guns. As air power began to play adominant role in naval warfare, plans were drawn up in 1944 under code-name “Barbara” to addair-defenses to the Z class destroyers. This was to comprise fourteen 37mm (6 coaxial, 2 single)and ten 20mm (3 coaxial, 1 quad) cannon as well as six 8.6cm RAG rocket launchers, withsome variations between individual ships.
