About the BMD-1

Introduced to the Soviet Airborne Forces in 1969 at the initiative of Commander V.F. Margelov, the BMD-1 combined light weight with formidable firepower. The vehicle could cross water obstacles, transport a four-man troop, and engage a variety of targets using a 73 mm smoothbore gun, anti-tank missiles, and machine guns. Aluminium armour reduced weight compared with similar vehicles, while a special suspension design enabled stowage in transport aircraft. The BMD-1 was also configured for airdrop using parachute systems.
