In 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth toured Canada and the United States. Dressmaker Norman Hartnell marked the occasion with Mayflower Lilac, commemorating the first visit by a reigning British monarch to North America and paying homage to the ship that carried the first pilgrims to the New World in 1620.
