About the Fi 156 Storch

Developed to meet a Luftwaffe liaison requirement, the lightweight Fi 156 Storch is famed for its remarkable STOL performance. Practical features such as folding wings for transport and long-stroke landing gear with robust shock absorption allowed operations from rough fields. It served in liaison, tactical reconnaissance and air ambulance roles, famously participating in the rescue of Benito Mussolini. Field Marshal Erwin Rommel also relied heavily on the Storch for battlefield reconnaissance in North Africa.
