The Artesania 1:16 The Indian Girl Canoe (HC-AL19000) is a 2024 wooden model kit that recreates J.H. Rushton’s celebrated Indian Girl canoe – a design typical of the canoes seen in Western and American Indian films. Introduced in 1902 for the growing pleasure paddler market, the Indian Girl was described by Rushton as “strong, light, safe yet fast, graceful yet seaworthy.” The model captures the character of the early 20th-century wood-and-canvas classic that became Rushton’s best seller through the 1910s and 1920s.
To ensure authenticity and fine detail, the kit combines precision laser-cut wooden parts with carefully selected materials and decorative metalwork. It also includes a wooden exhibition base with a name plate, ideal for displaying the finished canoe.
Design Heritage
The original Indian Girl was created by J.H. Rushton, America’s leading canoe builder of the era. Rushton enlisted M. Roundry from the B.N. Morris Canoe Company in Maine for his expertise in building quality wood-and-canvas canoes, helping the Indian Girl achieve its enduring reputation.

The Indian canoe was designed by J.H. Rushton, America's leading canoe builder, for the burgeoning pleasure paddler market, which introduced the Indian Girl model in 1902. To quote Mr. Rushton: "The Indian Girl is strong, light, safe yet fast, graceful yet seaworthy." This design from the beginning of the last century lives up to its name.
It is interesting to know that Rushton hired M. Roundry services from the B.N. Morris Canoe Company in Maine to build the Indian Girl. Roundry had the expertise to build quality wood and canvas canoes that Rushton did not. In the 1910s and 1920s, the Indian Girl model became extremely popular and became Rushton's best-selling canoe.
The naval modelling kit with the model contains all the parts you need to build the faithful miniature replica. It is made up of six wooden sheets with different thicknesses and cut by high precision laser to be able to extract the parts without any problem (plywood and hardwood), and a brass photo-etched sheet for decorative details. In addition, it comes with linden and cherry wood strips, round tube and rod in brass, cotton threads in different thicknesses and colours - black and ecru - and fabric for the seats. As a bonus gift, wooden exhibition base to assemble with the name plate of the boat.
Once built, the model measures 12.04'' (306 mm) length, 2.32'' (59 mm) height and 1.57'' (40 mm) width.
