Malta’s strategic location in the centre of the Mediterranean made it a focal point of intense fighting and a crucial base for the British Royal Navy. As noted in the historical record, Winston Churchill later remarked, “Never was so much owed to so few… Malta’s strategic value had never been greater than during the last war.” From June 1940, Italian bombing raids led to fierce aerial combat involving Italian Fiat CR.42 Falco fighters and British Sea Gladiator Mk.II biplanes.

The Fiat CR.42 was the main fighter of the Regia Aeronautica in the early war period, produced at Fiat’s Turin plant from February 1939 to June 1944 with a total of 1,782 aircraft built. The Gloster Gladiator, the last British biplane fighter, served with the RAF, the Royal Navy (from carriers and land bases), and several other air forces. Defending Malta, the Sea Gladiator Mk.II variant featured a three-bladed propeller, lifeboat housing, and an arrestor hook for carrier operations (removed on land-based aircraft).
