The T-34/85 first appeared in late 1943 with a larger three-man turret mounting the ZiS-S-53 85mm gun. Relocating the radio set into the turret greatly improved the commander’s situational awareness. This up-gunned T-34/85 was fielded to counter Germany’s heavier Panther and Tiger tanks, and the Mod 1944 variant is a popular subject for armour modellers.
