The Dumas The Brooklyn Tug Kit (1238) captures the character of the 1910 New York Dock Co. railroad tug in 1:32 scale. At 39.5 inches (1003 mm) long with a 9.5 inch beam, this sizeable model reflects the long deckhouses and heavy guards typical of early harbour tugs designed to push and tow car floats across New York Harbor. Supplied as kit part number 5501778, it features a vacuum-formed hull and a conventional die-cut superstructure, complemented by laser-cut details, numerous castings, and brass railings.

With its distinctive profile and purposeful lines, the Brooklyn offers an engaging, detail-rich build for scale boat enthusiasts. The kit is designed to convey the tug’s “salty” working-boat appearance and can be configured for radio control using suggested components listed below.

The Brooklyn was built in 1910 and owned by the New York Dock Co. Steam-powered throughout her career, she was inauspiciously sold for scrap in 1960. She was one of many railroad tugs, designed to transfer railroad cars across New York Harbor on barges known as car floats. Railroad tugs almost always towed barges alongside, with one car float on each side — hence the heavy guards and the use of single posts instead of H-bitts. These tugs were characterised by long houses, as there was no need for towing space aft.

The Dumas kit of the Brooklyn is designed to capture the salty appearance of the original vessel. Not just your average tug, the Brooklyn has the distinctive features that set early tugs apart. You get a vacuum-formed hull, all the components to build the conventional Die cut superstructure, and enough detail — including laser-cut parts, numerous castings, and brass railings — to keep you busy through many a long winter night. If you admire the pugnacious spirit of tugboats, this one's for you. Another classic model from The Model Boat People.
