Subject Overview
Derived from the HSS-1 “Seabat” anti-submarine helicopter produced by Sikorsky in the mid-1950s, the HUS-1 Seahorse was developed for tactical transport duties. Robust and reliable, it was widely employed by the United States Marine Corps from 1957 and could carry up to 16 fully equipped soldiers or around 1,300 kg of supplies. Powered by the Wright R-1820 Cyclone piston engine, the Seahorse reached a maximum speed of approximately 200 km/h.
The H-34 was also fielded by the U.S. Army in South East Asia in a close-support role, often equipped with 7.62 mm M60 machine guns. The French Army developed a further variant during the Algerian War with heavier armament, including three 12.7 mm Browning machine guns and a 20 mm MG151 gun.
