Historical Background

Since the First World War, the Italian Regia Marina devoted significant effort to small, fast torpedo craft known as M.A.S. (Moto Armate Siluranti). These agile boats achieved notable successes in WWI, including the sinkings of the cruisers Wien and Szent István under the command of Luigi Rizzo. Designed for confined and shallow waters such as the Adriatic, development continued into the Second World War with the MAS 500 series.
