Historical Background

Developed on the hull of the Italian ‘M’ series medium tank, the Semovente 75/18 evolved from the Regio Esercito’s late-1930s move towards self-propelled artillery to support tanks and infantry. The casemate-mounted 75 mm howitzer proved highly effective not only in its artillery role but also as an anti-tank weapon, capable of engaging heavily armoured British and American vehicles. Its low profile made it hard to spot, while solid on-road and off-road performance added to its reputation.

The Semovente 75/18 served in North Africa and in defensive actions during Allied operations in Italy. After Italy’s withdrawal from the conflict, examples were also fielded by German Wehrmacht anti-tank units, further underlining the type’s battlefield effectiveness.
