Historical Background

The M43 105/25 “Bassotto” was developed to improve the offensive capabilities of the Royal Italian Army’s armoured units. Based on a widened and lowered M15/42 chassis, it mounted an Ansaldo 105/25 howitzer in a casemate with strengthened frontal armour. Entering service in limited numbers in 1943, it fought on the Italian front and is regarded as the most powerful Italian armoured vehicle of World War II, balancing mobility with firepower. After the armistice, captured vehicles were employed by German forces under the designation “StuG M43 mit 105/25”.
