Aircraft Background

The Tornado is a twin-engine combat aircraft with a variable-sweep wing, developed jointly by British, German and Italian companies. While employed in several roles—including ground attack, electronic combat/reconnaissance and interceptor—its primary mission has been low-altitude penetrating strike.

Capable of carrying a powerful and varied set of offensive weapons, the Tornado is driven by two afterburning turbofans and can reach a maximum speed of Mach 2.2. Its baptism of fire came during the 1991 Gulf War. The air campaign began on 17 January, with objectives focused on suppressing military targets and critical infrastructure; Italian Tornado IDS aircraft took part in these operations.
