While 90 Ferdinands showed devastating long-range anti-armour performance against T-34 and KV-1 tanks during the Battle of Kursk, their slow speed and mechanical unreliability led to many breakdowns. In 1944, 50 surviving vehicles received upgrades, including a machine gun and a commander’s cupola, and were re-designated as the Elefant. These vehicles saw action on the Italian and Eastern Fronts and some fought through to the Battle of Berlin.
