Historical Background
Developed rapidly to bolster German firepower after the 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union, the Hummel combined Pz.Kpfw. III/IV chassis elements with the powerful 15cm howitzer, capable of hurling 43.5kg rounds over 13km. Entering service from 1943, it fought at Kursk and throughout the latter half of WWII, providing mobile, heavy indirect fire support.
Painting & Finishing
Tamiya provides extensive guidance for finishing this subject. Suggested colours span the Tamiya Color Lacquer and Acrylic ranges, including popular shades for late-war armour. Selected examples include LP-3 Flat Black, LP-55 Dark Yellow 2, LP-56 Dark Green 2, LP-57 Red Brown 2, LP-65 Rubber Black, as well as XF-88 Dark Yellow 2, XF-89 Dark Green 2, XF-90 Red Brown 2, X-10 Gun Metal and XF-64 Red Brown. For enhanced realism, Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color (Black 87131, Brown 87132, Dark Brown 87140) and Tamiya Weathering Master & Stick are recommended. There is suggested compatibility with a Tamiya Detail-Up Parts metal gun barrel for this kit, and Display Case D (Item 73005) for presentation.
Secured by Stripe
The Hummel was developed by German designers in short time, intended to provide a quick boost for troops that had begun to struggle in the aftermath of their invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. Its chassis was a hybrid using parts from the Pz.Kpfw.III and IV, and the gun was the powerful sFH18/1 15cm piece that fired 43.5kg howitzer rounds distances up to and over 13 kilometers. Hummels joined the fray from 1943 in the showdown Battle of Kursk, and served through the second half of WWII.
