Historical Context

Following the First World War, German armoured vehicle development was restricted, although limited armoured transports and police cars were later permitted under the Boulogne Protocol. After 1933, rapid rearmament and a strategy centred on swift operations increased the demand for mobile reconnaissance and troop transport. Serial production of armoured cars resumed in 1934, and by 1936 vehicles such as the Sd.Kfz.247 Ausf.B were standard in reconnaissance units. At the start of the war, the fleet was further bolstered by captured machines—including the highly regarded Panhard 178, redesignated Panzerspähwagen P 204(f) by the Wehrmacht. Semi-tracked transporters also became a mainstay, with the versatile Sd.Kfz.251 series serving widely as armoured personnel carriers capable of carrying troops or mounting specialist equipment.

Combining the Sd.Kfz.251/1 Ausf.A, P 204(f) and Sd.Kfz.247 Ausf.B in one package, this ICM set delivers a cohesive trio for display or diorama work, reflecting the mix of domestic and captured vehicles fielded in the early stages of the conflict.

According to the Treaty of Versailles signed in 1919, Germany was prohibited from possessing armoured vehicles. However, the later Boulogne Protocol allowed the Weimar Republic to have a limited number of armoured transport vehicles and police armoured cars. After Hitler came to power, Germany began preparations for a war that, according to German plans, was to be fought swiftly. This concept required high mobility for military units, which in turn demanded many different vehicles—both regular trucks and armoured vehicles. Serial production of armoured cars in Germany resumed in 1934, and by 1936, they were standard equipment in reconnaissance units (which included the Sd.Kfz. 247 Ausf.B armoured car).

At the beginning of the hostilities, the armoured vehicle fleet was supplemented with captured vehicles, including one of the best armoured cars of World War II, the Panhard 178 (designated Panzerspähwagen P 204(f) in the Wehrmacht). The German army also widely used semi-tracked armoured transporters. The versatility built into their design allowed these armoured vehicles to be used for transporting personnel as well as for mounting various types of weapons or equipment. The most common armoured transporters in the Wehrmacht were the semi-tracked Sd.Kfz.251 armoured personnel carriers.
