The Middle Kingdom army (2050–1640 B.C.) was formed by levies and led by senior officers appointed by the Pharaoh. Typical equipment included sickle swords, axes, spears and javelins, with blades and heads made from copper and bronze. Around 1700 B.C., Asian invaders such as the Semitic Hyskos and the Hurrians introduced higher-quality bronze weapons and powerful composite bows, influencing Egyptian military practice.
