The German parachute troops were formed in 1936 within the Luftwaffe and later served under the Wehrmacht. Well-coordinated tactics and Ju-52 transport aircraft enabled notable early-war successes, culminating in Operation Mercury, the capture of Crete from 20 May to 1 June 1941, involving up to 24,000 paratroopers and 1,200 aircraft.
