Historical Background
When Napoleon I entered Warsaw, he was escorted by Polish noblemen whose bearing and craftsmanship made a lasting impression. In 1807 he formed a regiment of Polish light cavalry armed with the usual sabres, pistols and carabines, as well as long spears. Uhlans took part in campaigns against Spain and Russia, and 120 Lifeguard Polish Uhlans escorted Napoleon to Elba following his abdication.
