Known as a lightweight armoured personnel carrier primarily used for reconnaissance, the M-3 saw extensive service in World War II. Created in the USA in 1937 and mass-produced until 1944 (20,994 vehicles built), it fulfilled multiple roles including reconnaissance and patrol, light APC, command and control, artillery tractor and weapon carrier (often a mortar). Over 3,000 were supplied to the Soviet Union under Lend-Lease. While withdrawn shortly after the war, some armies kept the M-3 in service into the 1990s.

The M-3 was actively used in World War II in a variety of roles such as a reconnaissance and patrol vehicle, light armoured personnel carrier, command and control vehicle, artillery tractor or weapon carrier (usually a mortar). Over 3,000 were supplied to the Soviet Union under Lend-Lease. The M-3 was created in 1937 in the USA, with mass production conducted from 1937 through to 1944, and 20,994 trucks of this type being made. The vehicle was withdrawn from service shortly after the end of World War II, but some armies kept the M-3 until the 1990s.
