The Zvesda Su-76 Soviet Self Propelled Gun (HC-Z3662) highlights the history of the SU-76M, the most mass-produced Soviet self-propelled gun of the Second World War. Manufactured from 1943 to 1945 with a total of 13,684 vehicles, the design made extensive use of proven components from the T-70 light tank.

Intended to defeat enemy manpower, field fortifications and armour, the SU-76M proved a versatile platform. In offensive operations it provided direct support to infantry and cavalry and served within manoeuvring artillery reserves. In defensive roles it was employed as conventional field artillery and as a mobile anti-tank gun. Its 76.2 mm main gun could effectively engage most contemporary German vehicles, including Pz III and Pz IV, and from close-range ambush positions it was even successful against heavily armoured Panthers and Tigers.
