Whether you are a hardcore basher looking to add an aircraft to your hangar, or a complete beginner searching for your first Ready-to-Fly (RTF) model, taking to the skies is one of the most rewarding parts of the RC hobby.
But with so many options out there, selecting the right aircraft can be tricky. Should you go for an easy-to-fly E-Flite trainer, an agile Blade 3D helicopter, or a camera-ready drone?
Here at Wheelspin Models, we know that getting the right rig for your skill level, flying style, and budget is the key to spending more time in the air and less time gluing foam back together. This comprehensive guide breaks down everything you need to know to get airborne.
RC Planes: Fixed-Wing Thrills
RC planes are the classic entry point into airborne RC. When choosing an RC plane, the biggest factor is wing placement and the electronics package. High-wing planes naturally want to level themselves out, making them brilliant trainers. Low-wing warbirds and mid-wing 3D planes are built for scale realism and aggressive aerobatics.
The Micro & Park Flyers
If you are flying in tighter spaces like the local park, these sub-600mm models are perfect. Look for models featuring electronic stabilisation (like AS3X or SAFE® technology) to keep your flights smooth:

Volantex Ranger 600mm Stunt Edition - RTF
For the Park Flyer: This lightweight glider is perfect for throwing around in tighter spaces and is incredibly forgiving for newer pilots.

Ready for a bigger presence in the sky? Larger wingspans handle the wind much better and are easier to see at a distance.
HobbyZone Carbon Cub S2 - BNF Basic
The Ultimate Club Trainer: With a massive 1.3m wingspan, this is the perfect plane to take to the local flying club. It features SAFE Select to prevent crashes and scale bush-plane looks.

RC Helicopters are all about mechanical precision and agility. If you've never flown one, look for "Fixed Pitch" (FP) models — they are much easier to learn on. Once you master the basics, you can step up to "Collective Pitch" (CP) machines, which adjust the angle of the rotor blades to allow for inverted flight and mind-bending 3D aerobatics.

Blade 120 S2 - RTF with SAFE - FP
The Perfect Stepping Stone: Equipped with SAFE technology, making it incredibly stable as you learn the ropes of single-rotor flight.

View DroneImportant Legal Stuff: Registering Your Aircraft
Before You Fly!
Before you charge your Li-Pos and head out to the local park or flying field, there is a quick bit of paperwork you need to sort out. The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) requires most drone and RC aircraft pilots to register their models.
If your aircraft weighs over 250g, or if it has a camera attached (like almost all modern drones), you will need to get an Operator ID (which you label on your aircraft) and pass a quick, free online theory test to get a Flyer ID. It’s incredibly easy to do, keeps you fully legal, and protects the hobby for all of us.
Wheelspin Pro Tip: Don't Let the Wind Win
Before you launch your new foamie, check the breeze. Here are a few golden rules from the lads at the shop to keep your models in one piece:
- Keep it calm for the maiden: For maiden flights, you want the wind under 5mph. Anything above that can easily push a lightweight park flyer out of control. (If you are flying the 1.3m Carbon Cub, it can handle a bit more breeze, but still play it safe on day one!)
- Nose into the breeze: Always launch and land into the wind to generate the lift you need.
- Let the tech settle: If you are flying a trainer with SAFE or stabilization, make sure it is initialized on a flat, level surface before taking off. If you don't, the gyro will fight you the entire flight.
If you need any help picking your next rig, or just want to talk Li-Po setups and brushless motors, give us a shout or come down to the shop.
See you at the flight line!
