Safely Storing Your LiPo Batteries
Updated by Mark
When it comes to having to put your lipo batteries into storage, things can get complicated and as ever there’s conflicting advice out there. So we are here to help you and make it one less thing to worry about.
How do you know when to put your lipo into storage mode?
Well the answer to this is if you are not going to use your battery for a week or more then it is best to put it into storage mode. If you’re going to be out and about the next day, then no need to worry, but for longer periods then a storage charge is well worth it.
We recommend never storing a lipo battery when it is fully charged or when it is completely flat. Putting a LiPo battery into storage mode will keep the battery stored at a safe level of charge without any issues.
How do I put a LiPo into storage mode?
- On your LiPo charger you will have a setting that says “lipo storage” or similar. You need to click into that mode and then select the voltage of your battery and the current (amps). This current will be different to what you usually charge your battery at - we’d usually set a current of 1 Amp for this purpose.
- Be sure to choose the correct voltage; so if your battery is a 3S (11.1v) battery you want to select 11.1V. And if it is a 2S (7.4v) then it will be 7.4V you’ll need to select and so on.
- Hit “enter” or “go” - your charger should do a quick battery check and then begin the storage charge. This will take some time to complete and your charger will usually beep or sound an alarm to confirm that the process is complete
- Your battery is now set to storage voltage and this is the safest way to keep your battery safe while not in use.
