The Tamiya M4 Sherman 105mm Howitzer in 1/16 scale (HC-56048) is an updated R/C assembly kit that revisits a Tamiya classic with a modern drivetrain. It introduces a new gearbox driven by a single Type 540 motor to authentically reproduce the M4’s controlled differential steering system, delivering smooth, realistic turning and robust running performance.

Key Features

  • 1/16 scale R/C model assembly kit; length 376mm, width 183mm, height 205mm.
  • Authentic M4 Sherman 105mm Howitzer exterior (body parts based on Item 56014).
  • Updated gearbox recreates the controlled differential steering system used on WWII American tanks.
  • Metal components for drive sprockets, suspension arms and idler wheel bases.
  • HVSS suspension with metal coil springs for smooth, stable running.
  • One Type 540 motor included and paired with an included ESC.
  • Full ball bearings for efficient, smooth drivetrain performance.
  • Pre-assembled plastic tracks with metal pins and connectors; die-cast drive sprockets.
  • Commander figure included; detailed M2 heavy machine gun with separate ammunition case.
  • Metal barrel and hull front machine gun cover provided as separate parts for added realism.
  • Accessory set includes shovel, jack, axe, K‑ration boxes, ammunition cases and jerry cans, with decals for case markings.
  • DMD Control Unit and DMD Multi-Function Unit are not used with this product.

Controlled Differential Steering

A centrally mounted Type 540 motor powers a differential gear with brake discs on both sides. Steering inputs actuate a servo to slow the inside track and speed up the outside track, creating a realistic turn without disconnecting drive—limiting power loss and brake overheating.

Running Performance

Speed control and steering operate independently, allowing intuitive control with a wheel‑trigger 2‑channel transmitter similar to an R/C car. The HVSS with metal coil springs supports confident handling on rough ground, while pre-assembled tracks and metal drive components enhance durability.

Needless to say, the 1/16 R/C M4 Sherman 105mm Howitzer is our first R/C model kit released in 1974. Now, we are delighted to announce the updated version of Item 56014 - 1/16 R/C M4 Sherman 105mm Howitzer with a new gearbox which uses one Type 540 motor (two Type 380 motors in the original kit) which recreates the controlled differential steering system of the actual tank. Generally speaking, tanks used the clutch-brake steering system – the power is disconnected from the side of turning direction with sprocket brakes and the tank turns by making differential rotations between right and left tracks. On the other hand, the M4 Sherman employed the controlled differential steering system which allows smooth turning by changing rotation speeds of right and left tracks with differential gear without disconnecting the power. While sprocket brake still works, the brake completely stops during turnings, and this system limits drive loss and brake overheating. During WWII, most American tanks featured this steering system. Enjoy the feeling of using the steering system from the actual tank, on our legendary R/C tank.

About the Model
  • This is a 1/16 scale R/C model assembly kit. Length: 376mm, width: 183mm, height: 205mm.
  • The form of the M4 Sherman is authentically captured in style. (The exterior parts are from Item 56014.)
  • Updated gearbox recreates a controlled differential steering system.
  • Metal components are used for drive sprockets, suspension arms and idler wheel bases.
  • The horizontal vertical spring suspension (HVSS) uses metal coil springs.
  • One Type 540 motor is included.
  • Features full ball bearings.
  • Pre-assembled tracks use metal pins and connectors.
  • Includes full ball bearings
  • Includes ESC (electronic speed control)
  • DMD CONTROL UNIT & DMD Multi-Function Unit not included or used with this product

Separately Required Items
  • Two-channel radio, steering servo, 7.2volt battery with compatible charger, and Tamiya model paints

Controlled Differential Steering System
A differential gear transfers power from the centre-right type 540 motor. This controlled differential steering system features a brake disc on either side of the differential gear, which distributes power to the left and right drive sprockets: transmitter commands cause steering servo movement which in turn slows the turning side track and speeds the other track up, with the resulting difference in speeds causing the tank to turn. This system was mainly used on American tanks during WWII.

Running Performance
Turning circle is controlled via the steering servo and brakes. Speed control and steering operation are independent, so this tank can be controlled by a wheel-trigger type 2-channel transmitter in the same way as an R/C car is. The horizontal vertical spring suspension (HVSS) uses metal coil springs for smooth motion and ensures powerful drive, even on rough surfaces. Pre-assembled plastic tracks use metal pins and connectors.

Photos of the Body
1) The compact, rather tall form of this Sherman was thanks to its use of a 9-cylinder radial engine.
2) The operational HVSS suspension uses metal coil springs.
3) Tough plastic tracks have metal pins and connectors and come pre-assembled. The drive sprockets are die-cast components.

1) A commander figure in M1 helmet is included in the kit. The detailed M2 heavy machine gun even has a separately moulded ammunition case.
2) Metal barrel and cover for the hull front machine gun are separate parts for even more realism.
3) Plenty of accessories are on hand: shovel, jack, axe, K-ration boxes, ammunition cases, and Jerry cans. They are separately moulded parts. Decals are used for markings on the cases.
